Rep. Sanchez Receives Nuclear Non-Proliferation Advocate Award

Issues: Defense

Washington, DC-- Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez (CA-47)  was honored in a public award ceremony by the Friends Committee on National Legislation (FCNL) for her significant leadership onnuclear non-proliferation efforts this year. FCNL awarded Rep. Sanchez with the 2011 "Non-Proliferation Advocate Award.”

As the Ranking Member of the House Armed Services Subcommittee on Strategic Forces, Rep. Sanchez has this year successfully passed three critical measures to improve our nation’s non-proliferation efforts.  Rep. Sanchez secured significant funding for the Global Threat Reduction Initiative, a major nonproliferation program of the Energy Department, and for the Defense Nuclear Facilities Safety Board (DNFSB), an independent federal agency that ensures the readiness of the United States nuclear arsenal. Rep. Sanchez also required a report on Russia’s nuclear capabilities to ensure that Russia is keeping in line with its commitment to the START treaty.  These efforts by Rep. Sanchez strengthen our nation’s ability to secure materials of mass destruction and prevent such deadly materials from falling into the hands of terrorists around the world.
