Affording Higher Education

Oct 27, 2011 Issues: Education

Dear Friend,

The current economic downturn has hitmany Americans, including recent high school graduates.  The job market is especially difficult for those without a college degree, and those who pursue higher education must cope with astronomically rising college tuition costs.

I’m working hard in Congress to make college more affordable for families in Orange County and across the country.  The education of the next generation is imperative to our nation’s success. We need our students to develop their talents and skills so someday they can help to innovate and solve our nation’s most difficult problems.

I can attest to the importance of a college degree and believe that its value is worth more today than it has ever been.  Higher education will ensure the success of our nation’s next generation.  As college and financial aid application deadlines draw near, I want to make sure high school seniors and recent graduates are aware of the assistance available to help them afford college.

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form can be prepared at www.fafsa.ed.gov by current and prospective college students to determine eligibility for federal and state student aid.  Though the deadline for the form is June 30, 2012, it’s important to fill this out as soon as possible as early applications give students a better chance of receiving the best financial aid package available.

The Department of Education also offers a free website www.college.gov to help students with college readiness.

I’m doing all I can in Congress to advocate on behalf of students and to make college more affordable for families.  At home, I am hosting annual “College Nights” where my staff and high school counselors personally help students and their families with the financial aid application process.  Please don’t hesitate to contact me at my Washington, DC office at 202-225-2965, or send me an email through my website, www.lorettasanchez.house.gov with your thoughts on this important issue.

Sincerely,
Loretta Sanchez
Member of Congress
